Dear Family and Friends, 2/23/99

We had a busy week at the Temple Shop. We are getting close to being self sufficient with Dad doing the computer cash registar and Mom doing the organizing of materials and the clerking of garments and Church materials. We had a group of youth, mostly Blacks, in from Pretoria for Baptisms and then a trip to the Temple Shop to buy themselves momentoes. They must have come thru the cash registar 2 to 3 times each as they would pick out their purchases one at a time. They nearly drove Titas and Dad nuts. We only had one CTR ring or they would have each taken one. I will have more next Saturday for the Baptism Youth group then.

Dad spends his slow times with people who want to know more about his Surnames in South Africa sheet. He asks them to fix up a about 3 or 4 generations of their ancestors that they think will match up with his, then he checks his hard copy and shares both ways. He was so pleased when the Boss at the Temple Shop said we could use the excess computer in the shop ourselves and he installed the copy of PAF for Larry on both Larry's Laptop and the shop computer. We have had hugh orders going out of the shop to some of the outlying mission areas. All of South Africa, both of the southern missions come to the temple here in Jo-burg so we see them all.

We know two of the couples that are involved in the Areas Jobs program. We have the Andersons that are to supervise the Employment Centers thru out the Area and the Altadonnas that teach the "Gateway" program that the Church has developed to prepare the inexperience job-seekers with more salable skills. They both do a great job and they travel a lot. Sister Altadonna has asked me to help her do some song paradys for their pep rally atmosphere that is used to improve the self-esteem and self-confidence of students.

We have rewritten ZIPPITY DOO DAH and HEY LOOK ME OVER. They laughed when the ZDD didn't sound too much like the original tune but the students really got into it and made it click and swing.

Last Sunday Dad helped 3 of our investigators get their interviews with one of the Bishop's counselors so they could apply at the Employment Center. This week Stanley brought 4 of the family's children to Primary and that left the others. Gladys and her 5yr old and the other two brothers to take a different Taxi(or Combie that's a 12 to 15 passenger van used for public Transportation by the Black community at R 2.50 a head) but they didn't show for the Gospel Essentials Class and we were all quite worried. We missionarys aren't allowed to give rides to anyone but other missionaries. (something about insurance)They had scheduled

their baptisms for March 6th. We delivered one of the CV's to Stanley (a CV is a Resume)from the Employment Center. We had 7 in the Class last week and only 1 this week but lots of extras in Primary.

We are assigned to two wards in the same building. They are the Sandton and Randburg Wards. One meets at 10am the other at 1pm so it makes 6 hours in a row for us. We take a lunch to keep our blood sugar up so we don't sleep too much.

This last Sunday Larry made an appointment to go and visit with his 4th cousin, John Henry Talbot who lives near the Chapel we attend. Joy Amm Talbot has a hobby of remembering the names and dates for everyone in the family so Larry had a great time for most of two hours getting the names of people on that side of the family. They served us some of South Africa's delicious 100% fruit juices and Joy had made an apple pie which she served. We are planning another visit in a couple of weeks. They were amazed when we arrived right on time, 4:30pm and didn't complain about getting lost.

We bot a book of maps of the City when we first arrived and Larry plots our course carefully before we set out to go somewhere. (All except the Zoo...We decided to walk to the Zoo last Monday and It turned out to be about 8 miles to and from and around inside. We gave up and didn't even go to see the Cats display, just too tired. We will go again but next time we will drive to and from.

The Area President and his wife finally showed up at the Ward and we got to see them and Larry got to meet them. They asked about Aunt June and I gave each of them a hug. Then I apologized to Sis. Simmons for hugging the Area President and a member of the Quorum of 70 as I thot it may not have been appropriate. Carolyn Thorpe Simmons said she thot he'd live since it had been 50 years since we had attended Elementary School and our Freshmen year at Bear River High School together. We plan to spend an evening together sometime in the next month, at least we hope to do so. They travel the whole Area so much.

The Sister Cheryldene Vaughan Johnson, the Sister that Larry went to Elementary School with in Malad has been our two doors away neighbor here at Dukes Court. She and Sister Johnston, her new companion from Mesa, AZ are being reassigned to do proselyting again so they are moving out of Dukes Court in a day or so.

Elder LeBaron, the Finance Elder in the Mission Office, has a Baptismal set up and Elder Colton is going to assist and furnish some of the names. Dad has been helping quite a few of the members get started on actually doing some of their own names.

The Regional Office loaned us a TV & VCR to familiarize us with the Videos that we are selling in the shop.

We finally arranged to catch a temple session on Saturday at 3pm. We were the only couple so we were the witness couple. We probably haven't been a witness couple in years so it was fun. We got our first roll of film developed this weekend. We will send two of 3 shots of our neighborhood to Lois. The snail mail thing here is very expensive and not very dependable. The telephone is also not too dependable. We have been stuck with a dead telephone this last week. They said water in the cable joint. They were working on it today the Telcom company said.

We type our E-Mail letter on Dad's Laptop and then Anderson's copy it into their E-Mail file and send it out. We can't receive the pictures so thanks for the thot, LeAnn. I think that we had an E-Mail from Elder SP Hunt and I pressed the wrong button and lost it. If it is still in your E-Mail records please send it to us Maryjo. We are well and happy and also working hard. Dad is doing some painting for entertainment and I do the washing. Thank you for the recipes Cindy, and the name list Don. Mom & Dad Colton
